When I was in graduate school the faculty were largely male, with 4 exceptions. Three of the four female faculty were the wives and FORMER STUDENTS of much older male faculty. The fourth was not. (Interestingly, number 4 was the only faculty who did not get tenure–she was up and out in my first year.) What message does it send to female graduate students when their only same gender role models in the department are women who married their graduate advisors?
I’m glad to report that there were some male professors in the department who were able to find spouses outside of their student pools.
